9 Free Services on Marian’s Campus
By Kristen Smith

1.) The Hackelmeier Library:

The Hackelmeier library is a wonderful place to study and conduct research. The library is available to all students, faculty, alumni, and community members for FREE! The library is located on the north side of campus, close to Doyle Hall.

On the first floor you will find the circulation desk where you can ask any of the working staff for assistance. There are individual computers available, along with computers prepared for group work, which are called pods. There are study tables, movies, magazines, and plenty of other books and resources that may be needed while doing research.

The second and third floors are filled with shelves of books, journals, and other forms of research material, along with study tables, and group pods. There are several cuddy-like areas where the windows reach out further than the building, giving the occupant a space all of there own.

The library is a warm, safe, and remotely quiet place to conduct research or simply do your homework, so come check it out!

2.) The Writing Center:

Have you ever had to write a paper, but didn’t know how or where to start or wished that someone could proofread it for errors before you turned it in? Well, the answer to all of you writing problems is located right here on Marian’s campus and the best part about it is that you can receive help for FREE!

The Writing Center helps with all stages of the writing process. Staff member, Krystal Zamora explains, “We can help come up with ideas, develop a thesis, organize, or simply proofread.” There is no such thing as a perfect paper, something can always be changed or altered in order to improve the assignment. Not only does the Writing Center help students with assignments, but with cover letters, resumes, short stories, and/or poetry.

The Writing Center is located in the basement of the library and is available to students, faculty, and alumni. “We see a lot of student work, but about 20% of our time is allotted toward faculty and alumni,” said Cliff Oldham, the director of the Writing Center. The Writing Center is open Monday through Friday at 9:00 am. You can make an appointment in advance by signing up on the appropriate sheet outside of the office or by calling X6244. Online tutoring is also available through e-mail. Just e-mail ksmith@marian.edu. However, e-mail tutoring does not guarantee immediate results and usually requires a two day turn around time. So, if your paper is due in two hours, it is not recommended that you e-mail the paper, but stop by the office for help.

A frequent visitor of the Writing Center said, “The Writing Center not only helped me improve my grades, but helped my writing abilities as a whole.”

3.) Computer Labs:

Is your computer broken? Are you out of paper and/or ink? Then, come take advantage of one of the two computer labs on Marian’s campus, which are available to students, staff, and alumni for FREE!

There is a computer lab in Marian Hall on the third floor. This small lab is open during regular business hours and contains about ten computers and one printer. The second computer lab is in the basement of the library and is open during regular library hours. This large room contains twenty computers and one printer. Each computer lab is stocked with paper, as to never run out, and are available to all.

4.) The Learning and Counseling Center:

Are you struggling in a class? Do you need help, but don’t know who to ask? Come to the Learning and Counseling Center located in Fisher Hall and receive help for FREE!

The Learning and Counseling Center is a resource center for Marian College students, faculty, and alumni. While the staff provides academic help, they also provide personal counseling and consultation. Among the many academic support resources and programs are peer tutoring, study skill enhancement, test taking enhancement, and GRE, GMAT, PPST, MCAT materials and aid. Some of the most common counseling services available are individual counseling, crisis intervention, and campus outreach.

There are many different reasons for coming to the Learning and Counseling Center that venture far beyond academic support, such as being homesick, time management difficulties, GRE preparation, or even drinking or other drug problems or concerns. The friendly and most welcoming staff will instantly remove any fears or embarrassment you might have had about coming to The Learning and Counseling Center.

5.) Career Services:

Do you need help finding a job or internship for the summer or after graduation? Career Services, located in Clare Hall, directly across from the cafeteria, is the place to go for help. Not only will Career Services set up an appointment to help you find an internship or job, but they will help you create a resume, write a cover letter, or fill out an application. This office is available to all students, faculty, and alumni.

Career Services also sets up informational sessions throughout the school year. Some are to meet prospective employers, some are for interview practice, and some are simply informational. Track Coach and former Career Services Director, Dave Roberts said, “Career Services is a good place to go with any questions or concerns you may have about the interviewing process. Career Services not only answers questions, but can help find you an internship or job of interest.”

6.) E-mail, Cams Student Portal, and the Technology Department:

Every student enrolled at Marian College is given an e-mail address and password. This e-mail address and password allows access into every computer on campus, which is where you will be able to access Cams, a student portal that allows students to view courses, grades, professor’s comments or instructions, and other informational material. The same username and password allows each student to also access their Marian College e-mail account.

The technology department is located in Marian Hall on the third floor. They are available during regular work hours and can assist you with personal computer complications. They can also help you change your passwords or create new accounts. “I was unable to access my e-mail account because my password would not work properly, so they helped me change my password. Now I access my e-mail at least once a day and am able to view cams, which has made my education here at Marian College a lot easier and more convenient,” said Tiffany Wedekin.

7.) The Police Department:

The Police Department is located on the first floor of Clare Hall. They are open, available, and patrolling the campus 24 hours a day. Marian College police officers are vested with full law enforcement powers and responsibilities. All officers that are employed by Marian College are required to be certified graduates of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Along with the normal services of a police officer, they also provide escorting services. They will walk or drive you across campus for whatever reason at anytime of the day. This service is especially convenient for women walking to or from Doyle Hall at night. The police are doing their job to ensure all students and faculty at Marian College are safe.

8.) Health Services:

A nurse practitioner is available to all students and faculty on the Marian College campus. She is located in the little building next to Doyle Hall. Her office hours vary from day to day, but she is open Monday through Friday. One can call X6154 or stop by to set up an appointment.

She deals with illness, such as colds, cough, and flues, minor injuries, and also administers shots and tests, such as the flu shot and TB test.

An athletic trainer is also available to students and faculty. His office is located in the hallway by the main gym and is open Monday through Friday with various hours.

He deals with various injuries, such as sprains, tears, and breaks. Tierra Ruffin, a sprinter on the Track team said, “When I tore my quad. earlier this season, Rick gave me strengthening exercises to do until my leg was healed. Now, while I still have some pain, I am able to run in the meets again.”

9.) Weight Room:

The weight room is open Monday through Sunday and is available to all students, faculty, alumni, and members of the surrounding community. The weight room is located in the basement of the P.E. Center. It contains four treadmills, three elliptical machines, four stationary bicycles, a row machine, five squat racks, and much more. The best part about getting in shape here at Marian College is that all the equipment is FREE to use at your convenience!

Late Night Players make us laugh.

Shameless Self Promotion, Rocks!

Students dominate Faculty and Staff in basketball.

Pep Rally got us loud and proud for the Knights.

Knights Win!!!

That was just a quick recap of this year’s homecoming. The school has seen back-to-back homecoming weeks that were successful and similar. Students know what to expect when the Knights get ready to celebrate, show school spirit, and welcome back alumni.

The men’s basketball team ended their eleven game losing streak with an overtime victory against Grace College. The scene was one for the ages with a record crowd and some amazing basketball from the Knights. At halftime, homecoming court was presented and the students greeted them with much applause. Congratulations were in order when winners were announced. The Princess and Prince winners were Freshmen Priscila Brito and Michael Hahn, sophomores Jacqui Payne and Andrew Morris, and juniors Kayla Brazzell and Jesse Miller. This years King and Queen were seniors Stephanie Horan and Joey Newton.

Everyone agrees that this year, homecoming was filled with fun and spirit. Next year we are looking forward to a fall homecoming with our new football team. So raise your glasses for a toast, “Here’s to the Knight.”
